Language of Poetry

Language of Poetry

by gabriella deandra

To most people, poetry is boring. If we do not try to understand how the author dedicates time in how he uses the language to stretch and express words, we will not be able to appreciate poetry fully. Writing a poem takes a lot of time and effort because the writer needs to make sure his words make sense yet translates his feeling to readers the way he wants to. It is complicated yet beautiful. The poet’s language aims to make readers interested and easier to grasp the idea that the author wants them too and remember them.
Figure of speech is used to express words in different ways so that it does not get boring. Such ways of expressions can guide readers to approach a more imaginative interpretation. Some examples of figure of speech are simile and metaphor. They compare two or more things so the reader can get an idea of what that subject is.
Rhyming is commonly identified in poetry. It is the repetition of similar sounds in words. With this method, the reader will find it easier to remember lines and words. It will also make the poem less boring and more interesting to the reader. If it is more interesting, then the reader will remember it more.
Repetition and parallelism can intensify effects by repeating lines. It may be similar to rhyme, but unlike rhyme, repetition will repeat lines and not words only. Parallelism is the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same or have the same purpose or definition.

Love lost
by Lang Leav
There is one who you belong to,
whose love— there is no song for.
And though you know it’s wrongful,
there is someone else you long for.

Your heart was once a vessel,
it was filled up to the brim;
until the day he left you,
now everything sings of him.

Of the two who came to love you,
to one your heart, you gave.
He lives in stars above you -
in the love who came and stayed."

Analysis ( by Gabriella Deandra) :
The first thing we can identify is that rhyme was used in this poem. The pattern used in this poem is a b c b because the first line doesn’t rhyme with the second and third line while the second line rhymes with the last line. They rhyme because they both end with similar sounding words such as for and for, brim and him, gave and stayed.
Next thing we can analyze from this poem is the use of figure of speech. For example, “Your heart was once a vessel, it was filled up to the brim”. The writer compared the characters love in her heart with a cup that was filled to the brim. This can give an image of how full her love was.
The repetition or parallelism used in this poem was used so that the reader can focus on the two subjects since the poem talks about two people. This poem talks about a girl who is faced with two types of love. One is someone “you belong to” and “there is no song for” which illustrates that this person is someone she needs and not someone she wants to be with. “And though you know it’s wrongful, there is someone else you long for.” This line shows there is a second person that she wants to be with.
The second stanza talks about how her heart was filled with love from either both of them or her love for either one of them. Once one of them left, she couldn’t seem to forget him “until the day he left you, now everything sings of him.” then in the third stanza, the writer compares the two people. One of them is who she chose to love and gave her heart to, the other one always watches over her, “He lives in stars above you and stayed by her side, “in the love who came and stayed.”

In conclusion this poem was written to show that there will be two types of love in our life. A love that we need and a love that we want, and not all people have the privilege to have both in their life. It may be hard to be faced with these kind of choices and you must learn to choose who is worth staying.
